Akaka Falls State Park

It is Hard to capture on film the sheer magnitude of the 442ft Water fall in the Akaka Falls State Park. The sound of rushing water fills the air, and the mist from the Falls can be felt quite a ways away.

The State Park is located 5 miles up highway 220, which begins between the 14 and 15 mile markers on highway 11 just outside of Hilo.

The drive itself is somewhat scenic, with good views of Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea's observatories and telescopes can be made out if there is no snow for them to blend in to.

Within the park there is a Half mile loop that you have to hike to view the Falls. The path takes you through thick Big Island foliage and you definitely know you are in the tropics when you follow the path to the viewing area.

It is recommended that you head towards the Kahua Falls first, that way you hit the steepest part going uphill, as going downhill can be a little trickier.

The 100 ft Kahuna Falls is a added bonus on the trail, as it is a site to behold on its own. Then you go a little further, and you will begin to hear Akaka Falls.

It makes your adrenaline rush a little standing that close to something so powerful. The smell of fresh water spray fills the air before you even see the Falls.

Probably the easiest access of the larger Falls on the Big Island. The path is paved, but there are a lot of steps, and not really wheelchair user friendly.

Take your time, enjoy the sites and be safe.

The trail will take you about half an hour to walk, and there is one steep part that is a little daunting, but it is all worth it when you are standing in front of the Falls.

Legend surround a lot of the waterfalls in Hawaii. As with Rainbow Falls, these Falls have their own Legend.

There was a Chief named Akaka that lived in the area, and he had a affair with a maiden down stream.

One day his wife caught the two of them together, and she ran away crying. Trying to catch her, Akaka stumbled and fell to his death at the bottom of the pool.

Below are some more pictures of Akaka Falls and the surrounding area.
