On the Big Island Hawaii fishing is a way of life. From Five year olds to ninety year olds, all kinds of people fish, in all kinds of ways.
Known around the world, Kona Deep Sea Fishing is some of the most plentiful and consistent fishing grounds there are. People flock to the Big Island for the chance to go out on a boat and see what their luck and skills can land them.
Every year there is the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, and many others like it bringing in participants from around the world. Blue Marlin, Ono, Ahi,and Mahi Mahi are the fish to catch.
Meanwhile on the shore, people are bringing in fish in all manners of ways. Some cast with a pole, some Hawaiian Throw-net, some swim a line out to sea, and slide the bait down the line from the shore. Then of course there are the divers. Probably the bravest of the fishermen, are the free divers.
Free Divers with three pronged spears or spear guns, swim around with the fish they catch hooked to their belts, or floating on a make shift buoy nearby. Taking deep breathes they dive down, shoot their fish recover it, and head back to the surface.
We also have lobsters, octopus, and who could forget Opihi. Opihi are a prized shell fish found on the shores of the Big Island. Opihi picking is very dangerous and there a number of people who have lost their lives picking Opihi. there are even songs in Hawaii dedicated to the Opihi picker.
