Hilo Restaurants
Looking for variety? Hilo restaurants range from local mixed plate specials to a wide array of fine ethnic restaurants.
Hilo has a unique environment that gives you a look at what Hawaii must have been like in the sixties and seventies. Growth came to a halt in spring of 1984 when the Volcano Mauna Loa erupted over a three week period, and threatened to destroy Hilo. Consequently many buildings in Hilo are from the before the Volcano erupted.
That being said, back to the food. Hilo has a diverse population that provides authentic ethnic food from all kinds of cultures. Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Indonesian, Korean, Mexican, and Hawaiian are just the top of the list. There are more if you look. The melting pot at its finest.
Then there is the Hawaiian mixed plates. Not necessarily Hawaiian food, but this style of allowing you to mix your plate seems to have originated in Hawaii. You can get a plate with Korean chicken, Kalbi short ribs, and a bowl of miso soup, with rice and Macaroni salad. And it is considered one plate! There are numerous mixed plate restaurants in Hilo, and most of them are excellent.
Kona-Kohala Resort and Hotel Restaurants
Although usually a little on the expensive side, the ambiance can't be beat. The food is pretty amazing, also. The Kona-Kohala coastline offers up spectacular sunsets, and you will find some of the worlds best resorts. Each resort is like it's own little world, from shops and golf courses to beaches and waterslides, not to mention the five star restaurants. You could spend your whole vacation without leaving the resort grounds! Kona-Kohala Resorts and Hotel Big Island Hawaii Restaurant Guide
