Punaluu Black Sand Beach
The Black Sand Beach on the Big Island that was made famous by Mr. Elvis Presley in "Blue Hawaii", sad to say, no longer exists.
Punalu'u, is one of the nicest Beaches with Black sand left on the island. Located in remote Ka'u on the South Point of the Big Island,
Punalu'u is worth taking the trip to visit.
The Variety and Quality of Beaches in Hawaii is what makes the islands the most famous. Maui has Red Sand Beaches, and our Big Island has Black and Green Sand Beaches. Black Sand beaches are scattered all along the coasts of the Big Island, as most of our coasts are made up of lava rock. When the lava gets broken up into small enough pieces, the result is Black Sand.
The Green sand beach, and most of the Black sand ones, are not the easiest to access. Four Wheel Drive is needed to get to all kinds of places on the Big Island, including the Green sand Beach, which is also on the South Point in Kau.
Punalu'u is very user friendly, with bathrooms, showers, parking lots, picnic benches, pavilions and even camp sites. In order to camp, we recommend obtaining a permit from the Parks and Recreation Office in Kona or Hilo. Parks And Recreation Website: Punaluu Black Sand Beach
Located off Highway 11, past the 55 mile marker, This Map of the Big Island of Hawaii, is an incredible resource, you can get directions, look for nearby restaurants, and so on.
Some suggestions if you are going to Punalu'u Black Sands Beach:
Take all the food and drinks that you might want, as there are not any concession stands at the beach.
There is elctricity, if you need it , and plenty of good drinking water. Kau water is some of the cleanest in the world!
Because Punalu'u is about a hour from the Volcano. This is a good place to stop on the way to Hawaii Volcano National Park. If you are doing the around the island in a day thing.
Don't try to take any rocks or sand home, as there are people everyday sending rocks back to the Big Island, because they experience bad luck after taking them. This applies to the whole island.
Of course sunblock is a good idea. I always feel sorry for the glowing red tourist. It makes a vacation a lot less pleasurable.Look for turtles there are an abundance of turtles at this beach.
There is a decent restaurant in Pahala, with good hamburgers, plate lunches, and other local favorites.
The Sea Mountain Golf Course at Punalu'u is pretty good too. Reasonably priced, and somewhat challenging.
There are usually time shares, or vacation rentals at the condos in the Sea Mountain Complex At Punalu'u, if you want to stay down South.
Other then that enjoy this beautiful Black Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii! Send us pictures, and comments, and we will share them with others.
