Kalona Salon and Spa:
My First Kona Day Spa Trip
After having a bout with postpartum depression, my husband David decided that I needed a day at a Kona Day Spa.
"A Kona Day Spa Trip?" I exclaimed.
He smiled and said "Yes, babe, a day at the Spa. You know, a massage, getting your nails done, the works. You'll love it and feel like a brand new woman."
At first I was skeptical, but at the same time I was thanking God for having such a wonderful husband that knew how to make a woman feel better. However, being a "tomboy", the only few times I had been to a salon was in my early teens to have my trusted older sister trim and/or cut my hair.
I will admit, at first I was intimidated...When I think of a salon, I see women chicken-pecking at gossip, and being cruel to each other behind turned backs. So, I did some serious scouting before deciding on a definite one-stop spa shop.
My husband, practically pulling my arm, was the first to compare prices and such, doing the almighty google search one night. We seen the Kalona Kona Day Spa and loved the prices for their packages.
The next morning, I gave them a call. On a Monday afternoon, I decided to get a full body massage, a "mini" facial, and a manicure/pedicure, which was to take about three and a half hours. All of this for the price of $225.
Monday came and I drove up Ali'i Drive to the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort where the salon is located. I walked through the neatly trimmed foliage and stepped into the little "stripmall" that they had going on there.
Upon entering the place, you definitely get a clean feeling. The place is really clean and well kept, and the ladies that work at the front desk are super-sweet. Actually, the whole staff is.
I checked in, then was escorted into a massage room that had soothing decor and was lit by aromatherapy candles by a lady named Jean-Marie.
The Kalona Kona Day Spa Revitalizer Treatment
The massage room was a little small upon entering, but my claustrophobia soon disappeared while I was getting an hour-long total-body, lomi-lomi (Hawaiian Healing Method Style) Massage. Her hands were tireless, and she did a thorough job. She started from the left side of my body, beginning with the neck, and worked her way down to my toes, repeating the same motions with the right side of my body. I had not felt that loose and limber since I was a teen.
Then, I was wrapped in a luxe robe and was taken into the facial room. Everything was clean, neat and organized, and I felt safe having my face touched there.
Lehua, the Esthecian, was very attention-detailed when it came to handling her products and tools for my facial. First, she had me lay down on the table and she wrapped warm towels around the lower 3/4 of my body, leaving my face, neck and decolletage exposed. A pair of UV glasses were put on my face as she looked into my skin with a super bright light. After she turned the light off and removed the glasses, my pores were opened with warm towels, then a milk cleanser was put onto my face. Wiped away and more warm towels, proceeded by a granular scrub-The warm towel process was repeated in between the massages, lotions, cleansers, aromatherapy mists, masks, and so on.
My face had never had so much positive attention paid to it by another person, let alone myself. Here I found out that I actually had rosacea, and what I could do to treat it. After the hour-long facial was pau, (done) she took me to the cosmetics counter and recommended top-quality (yet pricey) Yon-Ka facial treatments. I hinted that I would have to invest in these products another time.
Lastly, I was to have a complete manicure/pedicure done. Boy, was it a complete manicure/pedicure! I forgot the sweet Japanese girl's name, but boy, was she real nice to talk to.
We had a pleasant conversation while she helped my pick out the colors that I wanted (Super Sparkly OPI nailpolish...Pink for my fingers, and Red for my toes). She soaked, trimmed, filed, primed, colored, and top-coated my fingernails. (I skipped the trimmed cuticles option) and afterwords she massaged a wonderful, lemon-smelling lotion into my hands and in between my fingers.
Then, she had me seated into this pedicure chair with a built in soaker-tub that had bubble massage jets... I sat there relaxed while my feet were being invigorated in a peach-scented solution. She pulled out my feet, one after the other, and buffed away my calluses, and massaged lotion into my legs, feet, and toes. She trimmed my toenails, filed them, then applied base/color/topcoat.All the while I was having fun and thanking God for being a woman.
The Kona Day Spa Experience Wrap Up
So, for this being my first Kona day spa treatment, I am hooked and thrilled...I cannot wait to do this again!
Everything that was really eating away at me I totally forgot about, and when I did think of those things again, I discarded them immediately.
I am do glad that my husband suggested that I do this.
