Camping with kids?

I have just booked flights into Kona for myself, husband and two boys age 11 and 6 with the intention of camping for a week.
I have done this a few years back (without kids) and had a wonderful experience. I have since read quite a bit regarding safety issues camping on the island. Any truth to it? We are avid campers and use good judgement etc but would like to know if we have cause for concern. We plan to there in early august. Any feedback and recommendations greatly appreciated. Jo
