Update on Noho Hewa: Film Showings are actually Fundraisers

In corresponding with Anne Keala Kelly, the filmmaker of Noho Hewa, I realized the need to build this page to clarify that the film is not really done. It is still a work in progress.

It has won an award already, in its raw form, and Keala plans on entering it in more film festivals when it is finished, but all that takes Money.

So the screenings on the Big Island are part of a statewide fundraiser so she can complete her film.

Here is an excerpt from our correspondence:

"I realize to everyone that sounds strange, but it's not done yet. I had to show it at HIFF because, well, they accepted it as a work in progress and I committed to delivering it to the festival.

Then, quite unexpectedly, this unfinished film won the best documentary award. After that, it took on a life of its own and the community requests for screenings were something I couldn't say no to because of the political issues bearing down on us right now, particularly with regard to the state's upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case.

By the end of this week, I will have screened an unfinished, award winning film 30 times. I don't know of any filmmaker who has done that, as it is not customary to show a film this way. I had no choice, culturally or politically. Right now I am absolutely desperate to raise the money to finish it.

If I had realized things would go this way, I would have asked people at each screening to donate, and so far about 4800 people have seen it.

Bottom line is, David, it's not done. I still have a solid 4 - 8 weeks of shooting, editing, and music rights issues to deal with."

So if you have the ability to put some money into a worthwhile venture, even a small amount, please visit her site, and use the paypal donate button, or donate money at the films screening.
