West Hawaii Dance Academy announces their Spring Dance Extravaganza,
“ The Ballet Doll”
Selections from “Coppelia” & More!
Saturday, June 4, 2011 3:00pm at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Coppelia is a charming, funny ballet full of humor and ballet mime. . The ballet is based upon a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled
"Der Sandmann" ("The Sandman"), which was published in 1815. The ballet premiered in 1870. Coppelia introduced automatons, dolls, and marionettes to ballet. The original choreographer was by Arthur Saint-Leon.
Performed by West Hawaii Dance Academy’s aspiring dance artists, from age 3 through adults, “Coppelia”, with choreography by Midori Satoh & Artistic Director Virginia Holte, the performance will include live piano accompaniment by Megumi Kopp.
The Second Act of the program features “Cinderella”, a Creative Pre-Ballet by Claire , “Miss Kitty” Hollinger & assistant Allison Hollinger, performed by students from WHDT’s Waimea satellite studio, “Lady Gaga” A Hip Hop piece by Lee Vinson , “Give me One Reason”,a Classical Jazz piece created by Megan Chapman, “Pep”, a cute 30’s piece by Virginia Holte with music by JellyRoll Morton, and a Musical Theatre piece from “Hairspray” choreographed by visiting Guest Instructor Jim Cooney.
